Mrs. Y. A. Ayodeji - Nigeria's ICT Voice -  ICT Policy for Development

Welcome to Nigeria's ICT Voices - visitors to Jidaw.com (the acclaimed web initiative for IT and Telecom), have been sharing their opinions,  views and recommendations on the development of the Nigeria's ICT for Development (ICT4D) Strategic Action Plan and Policies by taking part in the Online ICT Policy Survey.

Some of such insights are published online as Nigeria's ICT Voices to raise awareness and involvement.

Here is one of Nigeria's ICT Voices. She says, "In order to achieve the right balance, all areas of the society must benefit from ICT There are lots of Nigerians abroad and foreign nationals wanting to be part of future developments. Basic infrastructure must be in place".  Here are the views of Mrs. Y. A. Ayodeji as captured from the survey:

To boost IT Literacy and Diffusion

Introduce ICT training at the very basic level from primary school age. Computers can also be used to aid adult education.

How has Nigeria's ICT policy fared:

I believe it has performed very well. It is still a growing part of the economy and it should not be restricted to those who have the means to access it. In order to achieve the right balance, all areas of the society must benefit from ICT

To stimulate the local ICT industry:

It will be a good idea to team up with World Development Organizations such as United Nations, Unicef to encourage the production or donations of cheap but good computers components to the country. Computer can then be assembled in Nigeria. Already there is a plan to make available wind-up laptops costing about £50 each.

How can Nigerian developed software be promoted
Such software must be relevant to economic and political development of Africa especially Nigeria. There are lots of Nigerians abroad or even other foreign nationals wanting to learn more about Nigeria so as to be part of any future developments.

How the private sector can become the driving force for ICT
Encourage what is relevant such as the right game software, automation, robotics. Nigeria has to ensure that basic infrastructure is in place. We need to ensure basic amenities such as electricity and any other support industries are functioning.

ICTs as an enabler of economic and social development:
Encourage ICT development nationally. Ensure that computer hardware and software are functioning and are regularly updated.

Comments: I have been in the ICT for years and I am very much in support of all efforts to promote ICT at all levels in Nigeria.

We thank Mrs. Y. A. Ayodeji for her time and contribution!
