Wunmi Hassan - Nigeria's ICT Voice -  ICT Policy for Development

Welcome to Nigeria's ICT Voices - visitors to Jidaw.com (the acclaimed web initiative for IT and Telecom), have been sharing their opinions,  views and recommendations on the development of the Nigeria's ICT for Development (ICT4D) Strategic Action Plan and Policies by taking part in the Online ICT Policy Survey.

Some of such insights are published online as Nigeria's ICT Voices to raise awareness and involvement.

Here is one of Nigeria's ICT Voices. She advocates the use of local languages in ICT development and says "no to kangaroo players". Here are the views of Wunmi Hassan as captured from the survey:

To boost IT Literacy and Diffusion

To boost literacy, local languages need to be adopted to teach computer at various sectors other than the use of English language. Also government should invest in literacy programme using NGOs that have interest in such advocacy rather than putting money where some people will seat down and share in their pockets. Women and girls IT and ICT development should be paramount.

How has Nigeria's ICT policy fared

It is not there yet.  There should be capacity built in the area of ICT Policy evaluation and review. The key players and stakeholders should be brought together to pieces the existing ICT Policy and see if it truly has their various interest, if not, a quick review is needed and experts in the field of Policy formulation should be used to put a standard policy statement on ground not the kangaroo players.

To stimulate the local ICT industry:
The development of IT components can be enhanced and encouraged by allowing Nigerians to get copies from developed countries as is with Computer Village in Lagos, and government building them up by dismantling the make-up of components in line with academic standards and knowledge. Then providing the enabling environment for industrialization by providing basic developmental infrastructures.

How can Nigerian developed software be promoted
Software developers in Universities and Institutions should be gathered to a software summit where they can be encouraged to display their works and skills such that our govt. can buy and make recommendations to foreign countries for adoption. This I believe will promote our local developers and make them to build software in local languages within the Nigerian context.

How the private sector can become the driving force for ICT
Provide Enabling environment and reduce the charges for operating.

ICTs as an enabler of economic and social development:
Be a part of the move and be ready to Learn. We should not be full of ourselves because there is a lot to learn from the developed nations but in patience.

Comments: This is good, please let us keep a good contact and bring all stakeholders to put across a good reform statement that can enhance appropriate Policy for the ICT world in Nigeria

We thank Wunmi Hassan for her time and contribution!
