summary : The Esie Monument festival showscases the rare Soap stone images in Nigeria'sfirst National Museum
|
Every since the day the "messengers of God" visited and turned the inhabitants
to stones, the town of Esie in Irepodun Local Government, located 75km South
East of Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital, had not been the same.
The mystical existence of the soapstone images and the annual hunting
expedition
that accompanied the worship attracted the Colonial Government to establish the
first National Museum in Nigeria in Esie town in 1945. The presence of the
soapstone images and their origin have remained one of the mysteries of the
material cultures in Africa.
With the advent of modern religions, the worship of the Ere has ceased.
Nevertheless, it is the intention of the Festival Committee to use the
mysteries of the museum to the advantage of Esie town to develop cultural
tourism and heritage management of the National Museum-Esie, Kwara State.
